Working Hybrid | The genie is out of the bottle!

We can’t hear you, you’re on mute! It’s a phrase most of us have got used to hearing in the last few years as we embrace hybrid working in both Cyprus and Malta. For some companies’ hybrid working has always existed, but for others it was completely uncharted waters that we were reluctantly forced to explore in response to the pandemic, in what became the remote working experiment. So, what exactly is hybrid working?  Well to sum it up it’s an arrangement in which an employee is able to work part of their time at the workplace and part remotely.

The benefits of hybrid working

More and more companies are incorporating flexible work schedules into their employees’ lives, with hybrid work becoming one of the most requested benefits from employees. The advantages of hybrid work can range from reduced costs to improved morale and additionally a more environmentally and socially responsible footprint for companies. Adopting a hybrid strategy allows employees to create their own blend of remote and in-person flexibility, empowering them to adjust their workplace to best suit them, whether that be at home or in the office.

Let me check my calendar

But what about the spontaneous conversations that can generate so much creativity. A top tip is to ensure you block time in your calendar each day where you are accessible to others. Let your colleagues know that you are free to jump on a call in order to simply bounce ideas off, talk through a challenge they’re facing, or just have a friendly check-in. It’s important to keep engagement and communication high wherever we are working.

The tools for success

It’s vital with hybrid working that we ensure we have the right tools and processes in place to continue to work with a collaborative culture and engaged workforce. Be creative when planning your next meeting, it need not be online and could in fact be a walk and talk, our normal office is no longer defined. We also must consider that some employees crave social interaction, it is important to strike a balance between home and the office. Some employees may actually prefer to be in the office every day so it’s important to note that one size definitely doesn’t fit all.

At its core, hybrid working is about matching the task to the best location. Some days may be best spent at home where we can focus on the big presentation we have to prepare, but equally a collaborative brainstorming meeting may work better when you are all in the same location. Hybrid working is here to stay and pretty soon it will no longer be a buzzword but simply the way we work.
