The deal, which was signed on June 25 following a public tender, requires Space Hellas to have the weather radars at Paphos and Larnaca airports up and running by March 2014. They are also obliged to maintain the two radars which will give almost real time information to the Met Services until the end of the contract.
The new radars are deemed necessary, the ministry said, as part of the Met Services modernisation which will see it substantially upgraded. The areas that need upgrading are the availability of immediate weather forecast details, warnings for possible severe weather conditions and advanced safety measures for flights within Nicosia’s Flight Information Region (FIR) and flights towards Larnaca and Paphos airports. “As a result of the contract, the Meteorological Services will receive from Eurocontrol 64% of any expenditure relating to air navigation services, and therefore the cost of the contract will be recovered gradually,” the announcement concluded.
