The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree will be offered by the private University of Nicosia (Unic) in the English language. It will provide practical training from the first year of the five-year programme.
During a press conference presenting the new degree, the Rector of the University of Nicosia, Professor Philippos Pouyioutas stressed the importance of the new school for the university which, in 2011, has established the first Medical School in Cyprus.
“Building on this high level of educational excellence, the University of Nicosia is pioneering again, establishing the first School of Veterinary Medicine in Cyprus and offering for the first time a degree in Veterinary Medicine in our country,” the rector said.
Agriculture Minister Costas Kadis, who attended the conference, said the establishment of the school is a very important development since “it places Cyprus on the international map of veterinary education” and contributes to the upgrading of higher education.
For his part, the Dean of the newly established Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Professor of Genetics at the University of Nicosia Stavros Malas highlighted the close collaboration of the veterinary medication programme with other departments of the university related to the health sector. This, he said, “can offer our students a comprehensive education in veterinary medicine, which meets all the needs of the modern world”.
“The programme is based on international standards of veterinary education and provides graduates with all the academic and clinical skills required for clinical veterinary medicine,” said Michael Herrtage, Chair of the Department of Veterinary Medicine and academic leader of the programme. He was a former Dean of the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Professor of Small Animal Medicine.
The programme has been assessed and accredited by the Higher Education Quality Assurance and Accreditation Body (HQA) and ensures the recognition of the degree by all EU/EEA countries and globally.
