In a tweet citing the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the minister said Covid vaccinations will start across Europe, including Cyprus, on December 27, 28 and 29.

“Pending the approval of the European Medicines Agency, we will start the vaccinations on December 27 along with the rest of European countries,” Ioannou tweeted.

The EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides said vaccinations will determine the quality of life in 2021.

“As we approach the holidays, we ask citizens to continue their efforts to contain the pandemic. Everyone has to play their part in preventing a possible resurgence of cases as we wait for the vaccine,” she said.

The European Commission signed contracts with AstraZeneca, Sanofi-GSK, Janssen Pharmaceutica NV, BioNtech-Pfizer, CureVac and Moderna for Covid-19 vaccines.

The commissioner added there was a seventh very promising vaccine by Novavax.

“All member states must now ensure they are ready to start distributing some of them [vaccines] as early as the beginning of 2021, once it is proved safe and effective,” Kyriakidou said.
