Unemployment down 7% in December 2015

Unemployed persons in Cyprus reached 44,550 in December 2015, marking a reduction of 7.0% compared with December 2014, figures released by Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat) show.

Based on the unemployed persons registered in the District Labour Offices, the number of unemployed persons in December 2015 marked a reduction of 3,336 compared with December 2014.

The reduction was driven by the decline in the sectors of construction (a decrease of 1,142 unemployed persons), public administration (a decrease of 915), manufacturing (a decrease of 651), trade (a decrease of 478), financial and insurance activities (a decrease of 464) and education (a decrease of 202).

Based on the seasonally adjusted data that shows the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed forDecember 2015 decreased to 42,361 persons in comparison to 42,418 in the previous month.

The number of registered unemployed persons in Cyprus peaked in February 2014 at 53,204 persons.
