Two huge white carnival masks, each weighing around 12 tonnes, were added to the artificial reef in Dasaki, Limassol on Tuesday, as part of the ‘ANDIKAT’ project for the development of the diving tourism network.
At a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, the President of the Limassol’s tourism development ageny, Tony Antoniou, said that diving tourism is one of the agency’s objectives for the enrichment of their tourism product.
He expressed confidence that the increased trend in diving in the tourism market will continue and thanked the department of fisheries and marine research for their cooperation.
“We have high quality tourism products in Limassol because Limassol is a city that competes with other Mediterranean cities,” added Antoniou, noting that the “ANDIKAT” operation involves funds of more than €500,000.
According to the director of Limassol’s tourism development agency, Maria Stylianou Michaelidou, the two carnival masks, measuring 3.20 x 2.50m, are made of C50 concrete, and recalled that, within the framework of the project, the boats – Lady Thetis and Constantis – as well as 11 structures and amphorae, were placed in 2014, while the department of fisheries and marine research undertook the placement of the Agia Trias educational platform.
The works are part of the marine protected area of artificial reefs in Dasoudi, while similar infrastructure exists in the sunken ancient port of Amathus.
The mayor of Germasogeia, Kyriacos Xydias, expressed satisfaction, saying that “our effort is to constantly upgrade our tourism product and such initiatives enhance this effort and are welcome”.
The project also includes the installation of a device for autonomous access for people with mobility problems into the sea at Dasoudi beach, near the artificial reef and the purchase of a structure with a capacity of 25 adults or 40 children for the screening of a 180⁰ film about the seabed.
