Larnaca crowned top European destination for baby boomers in new TUI survey

Larnaca has been ranked the number one European destination for baby boomers, according to a new survey released this week by global travel operator TUI.

In addition, two Greek islands also made the list, which includes seven locations in total. As mentioned on the company’s website, the ranking was based on reviews of activities booked by travellers aged 65 and over, a demographic TUI said is shaping new tourism patterns across Europe.

“Over the past decade, the population of the European Union aged 65 and over has increased by almost three percentage points, now representing over 21 per cent of the total,” the company said. With more free time, financial stability and interest in travelling off-season, older adults are contributing to a shift in demand away from the traditional peak months.

Larnaca received the highest average rating, at 8.76. The city continues to attract visitors over 65, who often combine the coastal setting with excursions inland. Trips to the Troodos mountains and the villages of Lefkara and Fikardou are among the most reviewed experiences.

In Greece, Skiathos also made the list. While it’s often associated with younger tourists, TUI said many older travellers choose it for its small scale and ease of access to nearby islands. Cruises to Skopelos — where parts of Mamma Mia! were filmed — remain popular.

Madeira was included for its year-round mild climate and natural landscapes. Among the most-booked experiences were visits to viewpoints like Cabo Girão and Pico do Areeiro, as well as walks through the Monte Palace gardens and the island’s historic levadas.

Cephalonia stood out for its scenery and day trips, including visits to the Melissani Cave, Myrtos Beach and the port village of Fiskardo. A number of travellers also combined their stay with a visit to nearby Ithaca.

Sorrento was recognised for its location and connectivity. Overlooking the Bay of Naples, the town is often used as a base for trips to Pompeii, Heraklion and Capri, while its historic centre and seafront continue to draw interest from older age groups.

On the Canary Islands, La Palma was selected for its quieter pace and less commercial feel compared with other islands. Walking routes through the Caldera de Taburiente National Park and visits to the village of San Andrés were frequently mentioned in reviews, along with stargazing from Roque de los Muchachos.

Menorca, the destination on the list, was highlighted for its slower rhythm and less developed coastline. Travellers noted walks through Mahon and Ciutadella, viewpoints like Monte Toro, and the chance to explore prehistoric sites and take short coastal cruises.

It was also mentioned that the survey reflects how older travellers are increasingly looking beyond mainstream tourist hotspots, favouring locations with lighter crowds, accessible nature, and cultural variety, particularly outside the high season. This growing interest hasn’t gone unnoticed by TUI, which has expanded its offerings aimed at older travellers in recent years. The company has also developed a series of trips designed for over-50s, focusing on culture, comfort and meaningful experiences at a slower pace.

Accompanied tours across destinations like Japan, Costa Rica, and parts of southern Europe allow older travellers to explore new places without the stress of planning, while long-stay holidays of three to four weeks appeal to those with more flexible schedules. Cruises, particularly with Marella, are also proving popular, with routes such as the Atlantic Islands tailored to those seeking a mixture of discovery and relaxation.

According to TUI, these experiences are part of a broader strategy to cater to the needs of this demographic, offering travel that balances ease, cultural interest, and a chance to connect with others in similar life stages.
