Speaking in light of the occasion of the International Day of Tourism on Tuesday, 27 September, Loizides said that tourism is the most important source of income, supporting many sectors of the economy and offering thousands of employment positions while contributing 12% of the GDP.
“Nothing must be taken for granted, on the contrary, the creation of additional responsibilities for better results and the extension of the tourist season are called upon in light of the tremendous potential which exist for better results,” said Loizides.
With the logo “Tourism for All – promoting universal accessibility” Loizides said that despite Cyprus making leaps over the last few years with regards to accessibility for people with disability, “we are obliged to continue in improving services through a strategic and long-term plan as there is still a tremendous amount of work which needs to be done to satisfy the needs of this particular specialised group of tourists”.
In conclusion, Loizides said: “The main objective of International Day of Tourism, is the promotion of the social, cultural, political, environmental and economic contributions of tourism on an international level, with Bangkok Thailand to host this year’s festivities.”
