Tourism arrivals up 1.5% in first ten months of 2014

Tourist arrivals for the period January – October 2014 reached 2,302,937, marking a small increase of 1.5% compared with the corresponding period of 2013, recent figures released by Cyprus Statistical Service showed.

However, arrivals in October declined by 8.1% reaching 251,453 compared with 273,587 in October 2013. This was the second consecutive monthly reduction, as arrivals in September declined by 11.5% compared with September 2013. Arrivals in August marked an increase of 5.9% compared with August 2013.

The biggest reductions were registered in tourist arrivals from Russia with 29.3%, (49,030 from 69,326), followed by Germany with a decline of 12.8% (13,044 October 2014 compared with 14,967), whereas tourists from Sweden declined by 6.8% (10,916 from 11,712).

Arrivals from the UK, Cyprus’ biggest tourist market, declined by 3.8% (101,122 in October 2014 compared with 105,081 in October 2013).

The somewhat smaller decline in arrivals in October compared to the previous months can be attributed to the smaller decline in arrivals from the UK, down by 3.8%, compared with September’s 17.1% reduction.

Arrivals from Greece marked an increase of 8.5% year on year in October (10,417 from 9,601), whereas arrivals from Switzerland increased by 14.9% (8,135 from 7,085) and arrivals from Israel jumped by 109.6% (7,769 from 3,706).
