Three team vie for Microsoft challenge

Cyprus will be competing in Microsoft’s international technology competition Imagine Cup 2015 held in Seattle, USA, in July 2015 with three teams.

The entries are in the categories of game, innovation and world citizenship where they were chosen from a panel of judges on Wednesday at the Cine Studio at the Universityof Nicosia under the slogan ‘Dream it. Build it. Live it.’

“This year, with the support of CYTA and FxPro, Cyprus will compete in the world semi-finals with three teams with highly innovative ideas and applications that can really change our lives,” developer eXperience Evangelist at Microsoft Cyprus Ioannis Stavrinides said.

In the games category, the ‘Fource’ team from the University of Cyprus created a game for Windows platforms, where the user guides a robot in a fantasy universe and emphasises the presentation of cosmological theories and their impact on everyday life.

‘ij’s’ from the University of Nicosia was chosen in the innovation category for a smartphone and web app, allowing the user to enter, share and store their feelings at various moments during the day that can be retrieved at any time.

In the world citizenship category, Frederick University’s ‘S.E.C.S’ (Smart Eco Cultivation System) created a smart, ecological greenhouse and open space crop management system that can be managed economically and ecologically through irrigation, fertilisation, humidity and temperature using a smartphone app.

“We are excited at the opportunity to represent Cyprus abroad. Our participation in the competition is giving us some wonderful life experiences, and we encourage all students in Cyprus to participate in the competition,” S.E.C.S team member Iasonas Iasonos said.

The three teams will be competing against 200 others in the semi-finals, 35 of which will be selected to compete at the Imagine Cup finals in July and will have the opportunity to participate in a Hackathon on the Microsoft’s new augmented reality platform HoloLens.

The winning teams in each category will have the chance to win $50,000 and meet the president of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, in a face-to-face encounter.
