Subsidising energy smart buildings

The government is seeking to upgrade its energy-saving policies, through a programme co-funded by the EU calling for more energy-sensitive buildings owned or rented by small and medium sized businesses.

The implementation of the programme was announced by the Commerce Ministry on Wednesday.

Those applying need to have their building issued with an energy performance license and implement measures improving their buildings’ energy saving standards.

The minimum requirement is a 40% drop in energy consumption. Measures include insulating the roof and walls, energy saving windows and high maintenance cold and warm air systems.

The state will subsidise half the cost of the energy saving changes to the building with a ceiling of €200,000 for the total cost. If the owner of a building wishes to limit energy consumption to almost zero levels, the subsidy will cover three quarters of the cost.

The money provided for the implementation of the plan is to the tune of €15.3 million from the 2014-2020 European Regional Development plan.
