Slight drop in unemployment in April 2014

The island’s unemployment fell slightly to 16.4% in April 2014, compared with the previous month when the jobless rate stood at 16.9%, according to Eurostat,

Eurostat figures show that the number of jobless people dropped to 72,000, or 16.4% in April compared with 16.9% – 75,000 — in March of the same year.

The unemployment rate in April 2013 was 15.6%, representing 69,000 jobless people.

Youth unemployment – under 25 – reached 42.3%, or 18,000, in March this year (no data for April), compared with 39.6%, or 16,000, in April 2013.

Euro area (E18) seasonally adjusted unemployment was 11.7% in April 2014, down from 11.8% in March and from 12% in April last year.

Unemployment in the EU reached 10.4%, down from 10.5% in March, and 10.9% in April 2013.

Eurostat estimates that 25.5 million people in EU – 18.7 million of whom in the euro area — were unemployed in April 2014.

Compared with March 2014, the number of unemployed people dropped by 15,000 in the EU and by 76,000 in the euro area.

Compared with April 2013, unemployment fell by 1.2 million in the EU and by 487,000 in the euro area, Eurostat said.
