Shipowners stress that Cyprus must take advantage of Brexit

Cyprus must take advantage of Brexit to develop as a maritime and financial centre, Andreas Hadjiyiannis, president of the executive committee of the Cyprus Union of Shipowners said recently, following a meeting with President Nicos Anastasiades, at the Presidential Palace.

However he refrained from elaborating on the specific measures that should be taken.

Finance Minister Harris Georgiades also attended the meeting, which focused on how to develop Cyprus as an international maritime centre and α financial hub, according to Hadjiyiannis.

Brexit offers an opportunity for Cyprus to attract companies that are forced to leave the City and move to another European country, he noted, in statements to the press.

“We must seize this opportunity” he said, noting that Cyprus has many competitors, such as Malta and Luxembourg, but it also has advantages.

“The most important thing is that we, the Cypriot businessmen, with our contacts, attract those who want to leave and bring them to Cyprus to give them information first hand” Hadjiyiannis added.
