Russia could drop Cyprus food ban

Minister of Agriculture Nicos Kouyialis has granted Russian public health services permission to visit Cyprus and conduct checks on certain companies' premises to see if they fulfill conditions for exporting products to Russia.

Asked about a report in the Russian media on the matter, Kouyialis said that the Russian organisation conducts such checks on a regular basis in all European and other countries wishing to export products to Russia.

He explained that such visits will not just take place in Cyprus but also in Greece, Germany, Hungary and other countries.

In Cyprus, the total export volume affected was around €13.5 million in 2013, including citrus, fish, vegetables, dairy, and fruit.

In February, President Anastasiadis said EU sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine crisis have neither proved effective, nor met the expectations of those who imposed them, but brought huge losses.

He said that sanctions have not only complicated the economic situation in many European countries, but brought no prospects of peace for the Ukrainian people.
