Registered unemployed hits a new nine-year low in April 2019

Based on seasonally adjusted data that show the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed for April 2019 decreased to 23,031 persons from 23,548 in the previous month. This figures marks the lowest number of jobless since May 2010.

Actual data shows that registered unemployed in Cyprus reached 20,531 persons in April 2019, according to official data.

Compared to April 2018, a decline of 4,588 or 18.4% was recorded which was mainly observed in the sectors of; trade (a decrease of 994), public administration (-461), construction (-569), manufacturing (-364), education (-182), accommodation and food service activities (-220). And for newcomers to the labour market there was a fall of 1,657.

The number of registered unemployed are people aged 15 and over who seek employment and are registered as unemployed.

These persons have to be able and available for work and must be actively looking for a job.

The number of registered unemployed does not included self-employed or those who seek part-time employment as well as those who seek employment in certain areas or for a specific employer.
