Q1 2017 employment level up 3.4%

Employment levels in Cyprus rose in the first quarter of 2017 an annual 3.4%, which was the third highest in the euro area after Malta’s 6% and a 3.5% in Ireland, the European Commission’s statistical office said.

Compared with Q4 2016, employment level in Cyprus rose 0.7% - as much as in Spain, which was the tenth highest in the EU and the seventh highest in the euro area, Eurostat said in a statement on its website on Wednesday.

In the EU and the euro area, employment levels rose in the first quarter of 2017 an annual 1.5% and 1.4% respectively, Eurostat said. Compared with the first quarter of 2016, employment levels in the EU and the single currency bloc rose 0.4%.

“Eurostat estimates that, in the first quarter of 2017, 234.2m men and women were employed in the EU28, of which 154.8m were in the euro area, highest levels ever recorded in both areas,” the statistical office said. “These figures are seasonally adjusted”.

In the first quarter of the year, employment level rose compared with the respective period of 2016 in all countries except Latvia, Romania and Lithuania, where it dropped 2.8%, 0.4%, and 0.4%, respectively.
