Public sector reforms a ‘top priority’ for the Finance Ministry

Managing the economy is a matter of national responsibility said the Minister of Finance, Harris Georgiades recently.

He went on to call the bills on public sector and state salary reforms a “top priority” for the government.

In remarks regarding the upcoming meeting of the House Finance Committee on August 29, he said that, “we don’t want time to pass and to revert to the old ways.”

He said that, “the economy is responding at a very good pace, but it is important that this recovery does not lead to complacency and a reigning in of the reform effort.”

Georgiades did not rule out incremental raises in the public sector salaries, or other benefits, but he stressed that these should be in line with the economy’s capacity.

Referring to the political parties, the Minister of Finance said that he hopes the matter of state reforms will be examined thoroughly, adding that it is “the least we owe to our society which has gone through an unprecedented economic crisis.”

He went on to reassure that the next budgetary plan will be balanced, in order to avoid reverting to the habit of deficits.
