President set to discuss NPLs with central bank

The problem of non–performing loans (NPLs) in the banking sector will be discussed in a meeting between President Nicos Anastasiades and representatives of the banks and with Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) Governor Chrystalla Georghadji, during the week commencing 16 November 2015.

Anastasiades who was on Sunday asked to comment on the possibility of such a meetings said that he hoped that it would be held in the coming week. The objective, he said was to finally see direction and determination on the part banks.

“We should therefore see how it is possible with real loan restructurings to give a relief to borrowers so that they can meet their obligations which have arisenas a result of the economic crisis,” he said.

He also reiterated that Cyprus could exit its financial consolidation programme with the Troika (European Commission, ECB, IMF) next March if the country continues to follow a disciplined policy.
