President Anastasiadest stated last week that “we will survive because we are committed”. The President is determined to either succeed or resign. “I have no intention of resigning. Therefore I will persist on in order to succeed” the President of the Republic stressed. Addressing a Democratic Rally party gathering to mark the founding of the party he has led in the recent past, President Anastasiades pointed out that Cyprus is expecting a lot from Europe.
He characterized the first part of his governance as “dark days” and said that he looks forward, because “you can’t build the future, while looking to the past”. Moreover, he called for unity on the domestic front, noting that nihilism does no good. The President said that before dealing with the country’s first priority, the Cyprus issue, the target must be people’s everyday problems. The government, he went on, is working towards this direction, though a series of measures. He said finally that decisions taken at the European Council “put Cyprus on a different basis”, and the country is entitled to EU support, similar to the one given to Portugal, Spain and Greece, while co-financing for European programs is increased.
