Despite a state-sponsored staycation scheme for Cypriots only about 80 hoteliers have decided to stay open this winter – that is, from December 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
This is what Philenews reported on Tuesday, adding that this is the number of hoteliers who have submitted a participation application for the scheme which gives them an extra incentive to remain open.
The scheme is addressed to all Cyprus residents on the condition that they have been vaccinated or recovered from Covid-19 in the past six months.
For comparison purposes, the domestic tourism aid scheme which expires at the end of November saw some 170 hotels and accommodation units participating.
And the one that covered the period between mid-July to August 31 saw 220 companies participating.
The deadline available to the companies for participation in the extended winter season schemed expired on Monday.
Insiders also said that about half of the hotel companies that submitted a declaration for participation in this scheme operate in the mountains.
