The House Finance Committee recently approved the Cabinet’s proposal for the appointment of Yiannakis Lazarou as the island’s tax commissioner and Yiannis Tsangarides as his deputy.
Main Opposition Akel and the one-seat Green party objected to the appointments citing ‘procedural reasons’.
At the same time, Finance Minister Haris Georgiades who was taking part in the committee meeting said the government will come back on the appointment of the other two positions of deputy tax commissioners after an investigation into allegations of distortion is completed.
Apparently, Renos Ioannou who is a candidate for the deputy position accused Iliana Charalambous who was a candidate for the commissioner’s position of distorting the value of personal and family property so as to pay less tax.
