New project to protect Alonas’ famous hazelnut trees

Alonas’ hazelnut forest will be cleaned and promoted through a project forming part of the national strategy for the development of Troodos mountain communities.

The environment department in collaboration with the forestry department has awarded a tender for draining the swamps at the Leftokarkon forest in Alona, Νicosia, which includes hazelnut trees.

The move was described as “the first step in the effort to save and preserve the exceptional beauty of the hazel forest of the community of Alona”.

Thanking the ministry of agriculture, the commissioner for the development of mountain communities Costas Hambiaouris said on Monday the project is of “primary importance” for protecting the environment and a beautiful landscape, attracting visitors and ensuring the safety and well-being of Alonas residents.

The commissioner also highlighted the symbolic importance of the pilot project, since its results will be used for protecting the other hazelnut trees that grow in Troodos.

The project is a part of the actions of the national strategy for development of Troodos mountain communities and is implemented following coordinated efforts of the office of the commissioner for mountain communities development, the agriculture ministry and the Alonas community council.

Alona village, with fewer than 200 residents, is famous for the cultivation of hazelnuts.

Petros Vanezis nature trail, which passes below the hazelnut trees, is visited by hundreds of nature lovers throughout the year and was described as one of the most beautiful trails in Cyprus.
