Antonis Latsiou was confirmed on Tuesday as the new president of the supreme court at a ceremony hosted at the presidential palace by President Nicos Anasasiades.
Anastasiades praised Latsiou’s suitability for the role considering his excellent qualifications and his long and successful career as a judge.
Latsiou was further praised for his integrity, impartiality and objectivity.
Anastasiades said Latsiou takes over the portfolio amid the recent passing of the justice reform bills, adding that he has full confidence in the court’s navigation of the new terrain.
The president reiterated that new courts have been established, namely the administrative court, the court of international protection along with the commercial and maritime courts.
The reforms will help ensure that swift and decisive justice is handed down.
For his part, Latsiou acknowledged the duties and responsibilities of his new role – stating that the court functions as an institutional counterweight which seeks to guarantee the public’s liberties and shapes values.
Retiring judge Persefoni Panayi was also present, having previously served as the president of the court.
