MPs to submit views on casino regulation

Parties pledge to submit their views on the casino regulations by end of February 2016, as MPs expect the issue to be finished by March this year.

The regulations govern various matters, including the individual functions of a supervisory authority and control of the authority by the auditor-general.

House Commerce Committee chairman, DISY MP, Zaharias Zahariou, said new recommendations were being submitted while his colleagues also had questions.

“None of the parties and colleagues have missed the chance to table new suggestions and queries,” he said.

Zahariou said the regulations had been translated from an English text and there were ambiguities.

“We want the legislation to be clear in Greek also,” he said. “Discussion will continue and the pledge is to conclude as soon as possible.”

Zahariou said they expected to wrap up the process inside March.

House Finance Committee deputy chairman, DIKO’s Angelos Votsis, said there was agreement that discussion must be finished as soon as possible. The text will be corrected inside the next ten days and with the ministry’s agreement we will put the regulations to the vote.

Votsis said the regulations had to be approved soon to enable the ministry to short list three bidders who will also propose the areas where they plan to establish the casino.

As it was previously reported in the media, the three most likely bidders are: Hard Rock, an international hotel operator with casinos in Hollywood, Florida, Biloxi, and Las Vegas; Northfield Sun International, a resort hotel and casino chain with extensive interests in South Africa; and Bouygues, a French company specialising in online gaming.
