Phillipides also said the general number of holidaymakers at hotels within the town and around was also pleasing.
“The hotels are close to 75% of their capacity which is very satisfactory,” said Phillipides. “There is always room for improvement but the early signs are very encouraging. Our aim is to improve the financial situation in the town and to trim down unemployment.”
“We have had an increase in numbers from Britain as well as from other countries around Europe. The number of Russian visitors is down due to the devaluation of the ruble.”
He added: “We need to continue enhancing our best product – which is tourism. Tourism, at the moment, is Cyprus’ most prized asset at this moment in time. Perhaps the time has come to introduce a ‘professional tourism school’ in Paphos.”
