Increased traffic at vaccination centres nationwide was recorded on Monday according to the Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantelas, following the announcement of incentives to people who have not yet received the jab.
Speaking at the state fair vaccination centre in Engomi, Nicosia, Hadjipantelas said the reason behind his visit was to ensure the vaccination process continues to run smoothly despite a protest on Sunday against the SafePass that ended with a violent attack against Sigma’s offices and the injury of 12 police officers.
Hadjipantelas said that the number of appointments was higher than previous days and that it exceeded all expectations.
A total of 5,745 people were expected to get vaccinated on Monday, in addition to the 914 people who had received the vaccine at the walk-in vaccination centres.
These included about 1,000 third-country nationals, permanent residents of the republic, who had booked appointments at the Engomis vaccination centre, said the Permanent Secretary of the Health Ministry Christina Yiannaki.
Regarding the vaccination of third-country nationals who are not registered in Gesy and cannot attend the walk-in vaccination centres, Hadjipantelas said that it is an issue that concerns officials and relevant announcements will be issued in the coming days.
As of Sunday, near 70% of the eligible population has received at least the first dose of the vaccine, while 60.7% have completed their vaccination, Yiannaki added.
People must get vaccinated, Yiannaki said, for the good of public health and to stop the transmission chain as to curb the number of hospitalisations, intubations and deaths.
In her own call to the public to get vaccinated, Agathi Lakatamitou, coordinator of vaccination centre at the state fair, she reiterated that vaccinations are vital to stop the spread of the virus.
