The Mall of Cyprus recently launched Better Together, a set of initiatives focusing on ESG causes and experiences, taking a step closer to a brighter future for all. The programme kicked-off with the Greener Together event, an exciting experience where innovators, pioneers and industry leaders got together to share the latest insights and products on sustainability and circular economy with the visitors of Mall of Cyprus.
In addition, embracing the ESG initiatives of Better Together, the Mall of Cyprus has committed to a greener future, by implementing a series of important upgrades in their facilities, concerning energy sources and consumption, as well as waste management.
Solar panels
The Mall of Cyprus is about to run on cleaner energy thanks to installation of a 677 kW photovoltaic system that is already up and running while another installation of an additional photovoltaic system of 350 kW is on the way as well.
Energy efficiency
Efficient use of energy was always a priority for the Mall of Cyprus, thus over the past three years, several energy-saving measures have been put into action, such as the installation of high-efficiency central cooling equipment (chillers) and a state-of-the-art BMS (building management system) that offers extensive energy monitoring and regulating capabilities. Furthermore, available options for moving away from traditional fossil fuel equipment and utilising alternative and higher efficiency equipment for the heating of the building are being examined.
Waste management
Moving towards a zero-waste future, includes tackling extensive waste. The mall has established a system for the organic waste produced within the restaurants of the Emporium Park. Instead of going to waste management plants, it will be separated at the source and transported to a private organic waste recycling and management unit, catalytically contributing to the protection of the environment and fuelling the production of green electricity.
With every little step taken, the carbon footprint and energy consumption of the building has been reduced by approximately 45%, while upgrading the energy rating of the mall to level B. However, it won’t stop here. Through forthcoming initiatives within the Better Together framework, the Mall of Cyprus is not only becoming a greener place, but a brand with a straightforward sense of social responsibility.
