Lakkotrypis said that discussions to bring natural gas have been going on for 10 years, with 3-4 efforts having been made. The problem, said the Minister, is that the quantities of natural gas needed in Cyprus are not high enough to justify the high cost of constructing the infrastructure needed.
The goal now, said Lakkotrypis, is to take a different approach, by buying the natural gas with the maximum amount of flexibility. That is, instead of signing long-term contracts, to be able to buy the natural gas on an as-needed basis.
A study has been completed and it will be presented in February 2017, to see what the most beneficial way of creating the necessary infrastructure is, said Lakkotrypis.
The Energy Minister also said that all countries in the region are significant for Cyprus’ energy plans, adding that relations between Cyprus and Lebanon soon be developed as well. The same, said Lakkotrypis is true of relations with Egypt and Jordan.
