Cyprus’ unemployment rate dropped below 9% in April 2018, the first time since December 2011, slightly above the euro area’s average, the European Commission’s statistical office said.
The unemployment rate in Cyprus was 8.6% last month, down from 9% in March and 11.7% in April 2017, Eurostat said in a statement on its website on Thursday. The number of men out of work was 8.1% and 9% among women. The percentage of jobless persons below 25 was 23% in January, which is the most recent available figure.
The jobless rate in the euro area was 8.5% in April and 7.1% in the EU, Eurostat said. Cyprus’ unemployment rate was the six-highest in the EU after Greece’s 20.8%, Spain’s 15.9%, Italy’s 11.2%, France’s 9.2%, and Croatia’s 9.1%.
The lowest jobless rate was reported in the Czech Republic with 2.2%, followed by Malta and Germany with 3% and 3.4% respectively, the statement said.
