Italian interest in East Med pipeline

Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis has said that there is increased interest from Italy for an EastMed pipeline, making it more likely that the ambitious infrastructure project moves ahead.

“This is a very significant development, because it is one thing for Cyprus and Greece to discuss the pipeline, and it is another if Italy joins the discussion, being one of the countries with the largest influence in theEU,” said Lakkotrypis.

Lakkotrypis advocates for keeping options open, citing the handling of Aphrodite as an example, in order to choose the best possible option for moving ahead with the EastMed pipeline.

The Energy Minister also gave a few key dates for energy in Cyprus: on April 5 the government will meet with Exxon, April 6 there is a meeting with ENI and TOTAL, and then the first drilling in block 11 will take place end of June. Two more exploratory drills will take place by ENI, or in cooperation with TOTAL within 2017.

Port problems “almost resolved”

The Minister of Transportation Marios Demetriades said that the problems at Limassol port have almost been completely resolved.

“There is a constant cooperation with all involved, and some matters are in the process of resolution, but we will resolve them. That is our role,” said Demetriades.

Demetriades also said that the development of the Larnaca port and marina is moving along, with five consortia expressing interest, adding that the project is significant for the economy of Cyprus and the city.

The Transport Minister stressed that this is the first time in Cyprus that significant external investment in all sectors has taken place, from the casino and ports to the sector of airline companies, satellites and real estate.
