Trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) reflects the online prices for the hotel market across Europe, from 200 online booking sites and hotel websites, shaping the average prices for towns, areas and countries in Europe. According to tHPI, the average prices for hotels across Europe have dropped significantly in December compared to the same month last year, while on average Cyprus hotels have reduced their prices by €3. More specifically, hotels in Paphos have dropped from €80 to €76, Larnaca from €63 to €55, Limassol from €95 to €89 and Nicosia from €113 to €99. Ayia Napa hotels on the other hand have increased the price of a double room on average from €75 to €88 per night. But the average price was much steeper elsewhere which puts Cyprus at a disadvantage.
In Greece hotel prices have been reduced even at winter destinations, with the highest difference recorded on the island of Corfu, where prices fell from €95 to €77 in 2012. Other destinations including Nafplio (€69 from €84), Kastoria (€70 from €82) and Heraklion, Crete (€68 from €77) are also offering cheaper hotel accommodation in comparison to December last year.
In Europe, hotel prices are dropping in almost all cities, with the exception of Germany and Austria which showed a 3% and 1% increase respectively compared to 2012. The largest difference is a 13% fall in Russia where hotel prices have reached an average of €111 per night down from €128 and Bulgaria where the average hotel room costs €55 down from €61 last December. Traditional winter destinations including Switzerland, Sweden and Norway have also reduced their hotel prices, with Switzerland remaining the most expensive choice among winter sports lovers at an average of €179 for a double room per night down from €189 in 2012. Sweden hotel room prices have dropped by 6% or €137 down from €145 last year, while in Norway the difference is 7% or €148 down from €159.
Trivago meta-search engine compares hotel prices for approximately 700,000 hotels around the world and is visited by 48 million users every month who claim to save up to 35% per booking through the website. Trivago was founded in 2005 and currently owns 40 international platforms. It is based in Düsseldorf, Germany and has offices in New York, London, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Athens and Istanbul.
