High cybersecurity needed for transition to digital age, president says

The transition of Cyprus to the digital age requires high levels of cyber security, President Nicos Anastasiades said on Wednesday.

He made the comment when Giorgos Michaelides, commissioner of electronic communications and postal regulation, submitted his annual report.

Anastasiades expressed his satisfaction for the work done, noting the importance of providing high level security in the field of electronic communications.

According to a written statement from the deputy government spokesperson, Niovi Parisinou, the president asked to be kept informed, as the field of electronic communications and cybersecurity issues were of crucial importance for all governments and contribute to the development of modern countries.

The commissioner informed Anastasiades about developments in the field and the implementation of projects related to high speeds, such as 5G and fiber optics. Projects on cyber security products, the Services Accreditation Centre and the European Union Cyber Security Fund Management Centre, were also discussed.

In his report, the commissioner made suggestions regarding current legislation and the operation of his office.
