Hermes joins global 200 with airport carbon accreditation

Airport operator Hermes is now one of less than 200 airports worldwide which have acquired an Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) certificate accredited by the Airport Council International (ACI), and joining the global battle for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

The certificate independently assesses and recognises the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions with four levels of award.

Hermes has successfully passed the first of four stages of the recognition by the ACI, ‘mapping’. To pass this stage, airport companies have to determine the sources of all carbon dioxide emissions within the boundaries of the airport company, Larnaca and Paphos airport, and submit a carbon footprint report.

The second stage, ‘reduction’, requires them to provide evidence of carbon management procedures, the third, ‘optimisation’, widens the scope to include third parties, and the fourth, ‘neutrality’, aims at achieving carbon neutral operations for all areas of the airport.

In total, less than 200 airports have passed various stages, of which 114 are in Europe. 31 European operators have so far been accredited for stage one, 35 for stage two, 23 for stage three and 24 have passed the final stage.
