Govt to hire ‘Covid inspectors’ to help enforce protocols

Ahead of the easing of the lockdown, the government will buy the services of 260 registered unemployed to strengthen enforcement of coronavirus related protocols and rules, the commerce, industry and energy ministry said on Wednesday.

The decision is for three months, with the possible extension of another three months. The monthly remuneration is €1000.

The ministry said that monitoring of measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 is to be stepped up with the forthcoming relaxation of the lockdown. As this will require additional checks with emphasis on safety and health in the workplace and in retail trade, the ministry has been authorised by cabinet to invite expressions of interest from today until 23.59 on Tuesday, March 2.

As part of the government’s social objectives of boosting the income of the unemployed, services will be bought from 260 unemployed individuals who satisfy the criteria, it added.

If more than 260 eligible people apply, there will be a lottery in each district. Those hired will be paid €1000 a month for a 40-hour week and will be required to pay social insurance as self-employed.

The ministry said that the 260 recruits, once trained on the procedures and inspections they must carry out, will contribute to checks on retail trade and other economic activities.

The minimum requirements to be eligible are: to be registered as unemployed with the department of social insurance, to have a high school diploma, speak Greek well, have a clean record and in the case of men to show they have either done their military service or have been legally exempted from doing so.

Applications must be submitted online on the website of the ministry on meci.gov.cy. For further information contact telephone 22867123.
