Government outlines when airline travellers can claim compensation

As chaos continues at airports around Europe, the Consumer Protection Service on Friday outlined travellers when they are able to claim compensation for delayed or cancelled flights.

Those who have booked a package holiday are entitled to a full refund if the flight is cancelled.

If the trip goes ahead but there is a long flight delay the traveller is entitled to an appropriate price reduction.

Where the traveller’s repatriation is affected, the organiser must assist them.

If it is impossible to guarantee the return or to pay the cost of accommodation, an equivalent category to that included in the package for a period of not more than three nights per traveller.

Meanwhile, travellers booking their own are entitled to a full refund or an alternative flight if the one booked is cancelled.

If the flight arrives more than three hours late the traveller is entitled to monetary compensation.
