Government expects information on Calypso in next couple of weeks

Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis said recently that he expects to be informed about the discovery of natural gas in an offshore field within the next couple of weeks.

“I expect during the next days, the next couple of weeks that they (the consortium) will present to me the data for the discovery at Calypso,” inside block six, he said.

In February, ENI announced that it made a discovery of lean gas off the coast of Cyprus after drilling an exploratory well in Block six.

As regards Block 10, the minister said that based on the contract, “the consortium has 30 days to inform us about its intentions, whether an appraisal drill needs to be undertaken, and after that, they will tell us in three months when and where this will be done. Therefore, we still have some way ahead. When we have news, we will announce it.”

Energy giant ExxonMobil and the Cyprus government announced last week discovery of a natural gas reserve of approximately 5 to 8 trillion cubic feet in Cyprus’ offshore block 10, at the Glafkos well.
