Government drafting national strategy for tourism

President Nicos Anastasiades has assured that his government acknowledges its responsibility to draft a national strategy on tourism and guide the efforts of all involved parties in the continuous development of the tourist industry.

Addressing the general meeting of the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents (ACTA), read out by Minister of Communications and Works Marios Demetriades, President Anastasiades said the Government had carefully examined the problems in the sector and was promoting solutions.

President Anastasiades said it was encouraging that increases in arrivals and revenue were recorded this year, adding that compared to last year tourist arrivals rose by approximately 6% by July, with a significant increase from Russia.

He furthermore referred to the activities of ACTA and assured that the Government would continue its efforts for the growth ofthe tourist industry, noting that collective efforts, strategic planning and the right approach were all necessary factors.

The President said the Government’s aims included maintaining existing markets, investing in emerging markets, improving accessibility, addressing seasonality, and promoting Cyprus abroad, noting that there have already been positive results and efforts would continue.

He also said that further tourist infrastructure was set to be created, which would be of top quality and able to raise Cyprus to a completely new level of services and experience.

President Anastasiades noted that, although the traditional way of booking holidays had changed, the Cypriot travel agents still managed to hold a large portion of the market due to their personal service and professionalism, and assured that the Government would take into consideration their concerns and suggestions, and would support them.
