The Cyprus News Agency recently quoted the resort’s mayor Yiannis Karousos as saying that the decision was taken at an AGM of Agia Napa Forest Golf – the company set up to build a course in the area. He said that three investors had submitted tenders and the company had decided to assign the contract to the Cypriot company L. K. Mazeri. He said under the terms of the contract, if work does not begin within three years, the contract is cancelled and the whole project goes back to Agia Napa Forest Golf to be assigned to another investor.

He said the 18 hole course would be of international standards and cost between €10 and €12 million. The company awarded the contract has land bordering on the course and is expected construct hotels, flats, restaurants and shops, he added. Hoteliers members of Agia Napa Forest Golf will be given a 35% time share deal on the golf course, he said. “The construction of a golf course in the free Famagusta area is of vital importance as it will attract a large number of tourists who play golf,” he said. The golf course will boost tourism and help extend the tourism season as it will be in use over winter, he added.
