“I met the President and I offered Germany’s support for the peace process. We are very encouraged from what is going on”, the ambassador said, a day after the announcement that the Cyprus talks would resume on May 15.
“Germany wants to help in very concrete way, especially to bring more business here. We see Cyprus as a great business hub between Europe and the Arab world and also a united Cyprus and Germany can do a lot to improve the business situation here. We see here great potential and we are prepared to do more,” he said.
To a question whether Germany supported the Cypriot President’s proposal for a more active involvement of the EU in the negotiation process for a Cyprus solution, he added: “Absolutely. Germany is in favour of a strong EU here. Cyprus is part of the EU, and the EU should be more active here. We fully support this”.
Asked if during the meeting they discussed any concrete ways for EU involvement in the negotiations for a Cyprus solution, the German ambassador said: “I am not really responsible for the EU but we support the President in this process. We had a brainstorming and let’s say results will come later”.
