House President Yiannakis Omirou and the delegation held a two-hour meeting with Russian Deputy Energy Minister Yury Sentyurin. Omirou said senior officials of Russian energy companies were also present, confirming Russian interest in participating in the burgeoning natural gas industry in Cyprus. He said the Cypriot delegation was asked to provide information on the ongoing procedures regarding natural gas in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone and the construction of a liquefaction plant for the export of natural gas.
The Russians informed the parliamentary delegation that Russia has a strategic interest in the energy developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region, said Omirou. The delegation comprises DISY number two Lefteris Christoforou, AKEL MP Nicos Katsourides, DIKO MP Fytos Constantinou, EDEK MP Giorgos Varnavas, EVROKO leader and MP Demetris Syllouris, and Greens deputy Giorgos Perdikis.
