Gas-fuelled cars in Cyprus by 2015

Propane gas-powered vehicles will be legally available by early 2015, deputies at the House Commerce Committee heard recently.

According to committee chairman, DISY MP Lefteris Christoforou, the rules and regulations governing the import, installation and maintenance of propane engines will be completed by officials of the commerce and transportation ministries by the end of the year.

It is expected to cut gas cost by 50%, according to the data presented to MPs.

Converting a regular vehicle to a propane-powered one will cost around €1000-€1200, Christoforou said.

An amendment proposed by the commerce committee will allow for propane engine imports, as well as giving gas stations the option of installing propane dispensers.

Main opposition AKEL MP Costas Costas criticised the government for delaying in promoting the amendment, pointing out that the regulations were ready since 2012.
