Funds for employment project

Nobel laureate Christopher Pissarides has been awarded €2.2 million by the European Research Council (ERC) for a University of Cyprus research project on employment in Europe.

ERC Advanced Grants are awarded to “allow exceptional established research leaders of any nationality and age to pursue ground-breaking, high-risk projects that open new directions in their respective research fields or other domains,” the ERC says on its website. Successful proposals can normally harness up to €2.5 million for a period of 5 years.

Pissarides said the research project is due to start in June and will create ten new positions for University of Cyprus researchers. The project will look at employment in Europe and the European Union, including in new EU member states, and analyse the structure of employment mechanisms in place with a view to implement better policies and address imbalances in employment. The research will also look at unemployment during crisis.
