Christoforou said that the project was in the final stage and if agreement was achieved on Friday between the committee, state-appointed digital chief Stelios Himonas and Internet providers, it would only be a matter of time.
“What is important is that for the first time the opportunity is being given for free access to wireless Internet hotspots to all of Cyprus’ communities,” Christoforou said.
He said that as a first step, one hotspot would be created in all communities and where needed two or more would be added, according to the needs of each community.
The communities have already secured a substantial budget from the EU towards that end, Christoforou said.
A second issue discussed was the possibility of free wireless Internet access island-wide to all students.
“They will have access codes and they will be able to have free access everywhere there is available wi-fi; it is a suggestion that was viewed positively by the internet providers and we hope that we can reach an agreement on that too,” he said.
