The event will take place on Saturday October 5 at the UNESCO Amphitheatre at the University of Nicosia, and is open to the public.

This event will be split into two parts. Session I will focus on the political, economic and social impact of the crises in Portugal, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Spain, while Session II will examine relations between Cyprus and Germany. Experts will present the findings of the five country studies, conducted on behalf of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion.

The second-part consists of a panel discussion comprising Cypriot and German nationals. They will discuss German-Cypriot relations in the context of the agreement reached between Cyprus and the troika and ask questions about the impact of those evolving relations on the survival of the eurozone.

Participants include the former Labour Minister of Portugal, Paulo Pedroso; the Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, George Markopouliotis; the German MP and Vice-Chairman of the German-Cypriot Parliamentary Group, Heinz-Joachim Barchmann, as well as academics, diplomats and journalists from Cyprus such as Michalis Attalides (Rector of the University of Nicosia); Michalis Persianis (Kathimerini newspaper); Uwe Wixforth (Financial and Commercial Counsellor at the German Embassy); Christina Ioannou (Assistant Professor at the University of Nicosia) and Fiona Mullen (Director, Sapienta Economics Ltd).
