EU-funded project to help SMEs in energy management

The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Keve) on Tuesday announced the launch of the EcoSMEnergy project.

The project, co-funded by the European Union under the LIFE Programme, aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Europe address challenges related to high energy consumption. “These businesses are grappling with improving energy efficiency, a lack of awareness, insufficient incentives, and limited access to financing solutions,” the chamber said in its statement. “At the same time, they must navigate complex information systems and fragmented support structures, hindering the adoption of sustainable practices,” it added.

The initiative, which spans 36 months from October 2024 to September 2027, is implemented by a consortium of 12 partners from 10 European countries, including Cyprus, under the coordination of Eurochambers. Eurochambres is the Association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The association is a representative organisation in Brussels for businesses in Europe through 42 members (43 national associations of chambers of commerce and industry and two transnational chamber organisations) and a European network of regional and local chambers. “This project is designed to empower SMEs with the tools, expertise, and financial support they need to enhance energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and contribute to the planet’s sustainability,” the announcement explained. Moreover, the chamber mentioned that the initiative targets SMEs in several industrial sectors, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, rubber and plastic products, and electrical equipment manufacturing.

Participating businesses will benefit from free energy audits and tailored Energy Management Systems (EnMS). These systems will help businesses optimise their energy use and streamline operations. “The free energy audits will allow SMEs to identify inefficiencies and take immediate steps to reduce energy wastage,” Keve said. The project will also provide access to financial solutions for energy efficiency projects, including renewable energy systems. A digital platform called IMPAWATT will offer additional resources such as energy monitoring tools, training materials, and optimisation advice.

Keve also spoke about the importance of training in energy management and the use of monitoring systems. “Through these training programmes, SMEs can not only improve their energy efficiency but also significantly lower their electricity bills,” the announcement said. Additionally, participating businesses will also receive expert guidance on implementing energy-saving measures that align with their specific operational needs.

SMEs interested in participating are encouraged to register through Keve’s website. “This is a unique opportunity for businesses to gain support and expertise at no cost,” the announcement mentioned.
