Energy Minister visits Cairo to discuss energy prospects

Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis is set for talks with Egyptian counterparts in Cairo in what he says is the first of a three-month series of visits to different countries to discuss the island's LNG prospects.

Lakkotrypis will be holding talks with officials from different departments including energy, trade and foreign affairs as the Cypriot government looks to preserve its warm relations with its North African neighbour.

During the various meetings, the minister will also be giving a full briefing to Egyptian officials on Cyprus’ progress in the field of LNG drilling while also informing them of the possibility to sell EEZ blocks to Egypt once Nicosia is in a position to do so.

The minister’s visit to Egypt is part of a broader plan in which he will also hold talks with high-ranking government officials in Oman, Jordan and Romania between September and October.

It is said that some nations have turned their heads towards Cyprus as a possible source of fuel as the crisis in the Ukraine continues.
