The education ministry is more than willing to invest in more summer school programmes, Minister Prodromos Prodromou said on Friday while visiting two Nicosia schools participating in the programme.
Prodromou visited Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios and Ayios Andreas primary schools in Nicosia along with Nicosia Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis, saying the visit left them with great impressions.
“Children attending these summer schools have the opportunity to participate in creative activities with a subject matter that goes beyond conventional school subjects, like art, music, baking and games,” as well as field trips and trips to the nearby municipal pool.
This is a great help to families, but also significant for the children themselves, he said, adding that the education ministry is more than willing to set aside some of its budget to help local authorities across the island set up summer school programmes of their own.
“These are not schools in the conventional sense, but they offer equally useful creative activities which, as we have seen today, children can greatly benefit from”.
Prodromou said the ministry will be in touch with the mayors of Nicosia, Limassol, Strovolos, Larnaca, Paphos, and any other interested municipalities, to discuss expanding the programme to more schools.
