Cyprus not at risk of Covid-19 fifth wave, says leading scientist

Cyprus is not at risk of a fifth wave of Covid-19 since as its epidemiological picture is quite good, leading health expert Dr Petros Karayiannis has told Philenews.

The latest epidemiological indicators last Friday showed that the 14-day cumulative diagnosis rate dropped by 30 per cent compared with the previous period, he added.

In particular, the new cases translated to a 14-day cumulative diagnosis rate of 180.9 per 100,000 population, compared with 260.5 per 100,000 over the previous two weeks.

Expressing the belief that there will be no fifth wave of Covid-19, he also said caution should prevail because the picture could easily change.

“Coronavirus infections are like quicksand, the epidemiological picture of the country can change from one minute to another,” he also said.

“That’s why it is essential to continue with personal protection measures so as to also prevent the outbreak of seasonal flu as well. Its combination with the coronavirus will create a difficult situation and a difficult winter,” he added.
