Cyprus-Japan Relations: A Partnership with Growing Potential

Cyprus and Japan have enjoyed more than 60 years of diplomatic relations built on shared principles of democracy, the rule of law, and respect for a free, rules-based international order. Since the establishment of their embassies in Nicosia and Tokyo in 2018 and 2019, respectively, bilateral ties have grown significantly, fostering cooperation in various domains such as trade, technology, education, and culture.

Both countries are staunch advocates of multilateralism and uphold the principles of the UN Charter and International Law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. They engage in regular political consultations, most recently in Nicosia in 2024, reflecting their commitment to dialogue and collaboration. Cyprus values Japan’s principled stance on the Cyprus issue and its support for a just and lasting resolution in line with international law and UN Security Council resolutions. As a member of the EU, Cyprus also emphasises the interconnected security of Europe and the Indo-Pacific, strongly supporting the EU-Japan strategic partnership to address global challenges.

Economic cooperation between the two nations has shown steady progress, marked by the inaugural Cyprus-Japan Business Forum held in Tokyo in 2024. Cyprus serves as a strategic gateway to Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, presenting opportunities for Japanese businesses to access these markets. Japan’s exports to Cyprus primarily include vehicles, ships, and electronics, while Cyprus exports agricultural products and pharmaceuticals. Additionally, Japanese companies in the financial and shipping sectors are successfully operating in Cyprus, and there is significant potential to attract further investment in areas like digital transformation, green energy, and shipping.

Cyprus’ favourable business environment, including its EU membership, skilled workforce, and attractive tax and intellectual property systems, makes it a promising destination for Japanese enterprises. However, efforts to increase awareness among Japanese investors are needed to fully realise this potential.

Cultural ties between the two nations are thriving, symbolised by projects such as the establishment of a cherry blossom park in Kampos village, promoting intercultural friendship. In the field of education and innovation, Cyprus and Japan signed a memorandum of cooperation on science and technology in 2024, laying the groundwork for deeper collaboration in research, innovation, and start-up promotion.

Cyprus and Japan share a vision for a peaceful and prosperous global community, with maritime cooperation and international law as key pillars of their partnership. By leveraging their complementary strengths and shared values, the relationship is poised to deepen further, creating new opportunities for mutual benefit across diverse sectors.
