Cyprus-China Relations: A Strategic Partnership Rooted in Mutual Benefit

Cyprus and China enjoy a strong relationship built on mutual trust, respect, and shared values, despite the vast geographical distance between them. Over the decades, their ties have deepened across a spectrum of areas, including political, economic, cultural, and educational cooperation. A testament to this robust bond was the establishment of a strategic partnership in 2021, marking the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

The political trust between Cyprus and China is unwavering, with both nations supporting each other on core issues. Cyprus adheres firmly to the One China Policy, while China maintains a consistent and principled stance on the Cyprus issue, emphasising its commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. The two nations have also collaborated effectively in multilateral fora such as the United Nations, advocating for multilateralism, international law, and the UN Charter. As an EU member state, Cyprus plays a unique role in fostering constructive EU-China relations, advocating open dialogue on global challenges such as climate change. This commitment to multilateralism and dialogue reinforces the partnership’s strategic importance.

Economic collaboration between Cyprus and China has expanded significantly in recent years. China is among Cyprus’ largest trading partners, with bilateral trade reaching nearly US$1 billion in 2023. Cypriot products like wine, cheese, and beer are gaining recognition in China through participation in major trade expos such as the Canton Fair and the China International Import Expo.

Chinese investments in Cyprus have also made a substantial impact. Huawei has been instrumental in Cyprus achieving 100% 5G coverage, placing the nation among the EU’s leaders in mobile network speed. Additionally, video game developer Outfit7, with headquarters in Limassol, contributes to the local ICT industry. Major infrastructure projects, such as the Combined Cycle Power Plant by Harbin Electric International and the Vasiliko LNG project, further highlight China’s role in Cyprus’ energy transformation and infrastructure development.

Cultural ties between the two nations are flourishing, driven by dynamic people-to-people exchanges. Events such as the China-Cyprus Youth Exchange Week and the Nicosia Book Fest, where China was the country of honour, underscore the vibrant cultural dialogue. The establishment of the China-Cyprus Sister City Alliance strengthens these ties further. The recent announcement of visa-free travel for Cypriot citizens to China from October 2024 to December 2025 will enhance these exchanges, fostering deeper connections between the people of both countries.

Cyprus and China’s relationship exemplifies a partnership rooted in equality, mutual benefit, and shared aspirations. As they move forward, opportunities for collaboration in green energy, digital economy, and infrastructure promise to strengthen their ties further. Together, they continue to set a benchmark for cooperation between nations of different sizes and civilisations, building a future of shared prosperity.
